Though a single author cannot be credited for episodic, contributor-driven projects like Islander, it is certainly an aesthetic project. Each issue is themed around an idea that describes our present moment--for example, the most recent issue at the time of publication tackles the role of heroism in the modern world. The covers alone are works of art, and the visual design on every page is stunning. Flipping through Islander is an countercultural experience, even if you don't read the articles--which are great in their own right, even if not explicitly artistic.
Though some may argue that Islander is a work of commentary more than a work of art, I believe it is both a philosophical experience and an artistic one, and for that reason I have included it in the database. - VT52
